The width between your sit bones, or Ischial tuberosities, is one of the primary factors determining your ideal saddle width. You can measure your sit bone width by going for a bike fit, where you will sit on the PRO Saddle Cube. Or you can do it at home, using the method described below.
PRO Saddles are available in various widths – typically 132, 142, 152 or even 162 millimetres – to provide you with the best option for your unique anatomy. The ideal saddle width is primarily determined by the distance between your sit bones, or scientifically the Ischial tuberosities. They are the lowest bones in your pelvis and while they are covered by your gluteus maximus while standing, they are left exposed while seated.
You can measure your sit bone width by going for a bike fit. There the bike fitment professional will seat you on a gel cut out and then measure the distance between the two pronounced indentations formed by your sit bones as they press into the gel cushioning. To do the same at home you will need:• A chair with a flat surface• 4 pieces paper towel• A bidon or wet towel• An A4 piece of paper• A measurement tool• A marker pen
Take the chair with a flat, hard surface. Make sure it is water-resistant.
Place the sheets of paper towel next to each other; in two, two-layer stacks.
Wet the paper towel stacks by dripping water on the paper towel with your bidon, or by placing a wet towel over the paper towel stacks. Then place the sheet of A4 paper over the wet paper towel stacks. Make sure it's entirely wet.
Place the sheet of printing paper over the wet paper towel stack.
While wearing thin trousers or shorts, which do no pad your sit bones, sit on the paper towel with you back held straight at 90 degrees. Place your heels against the front legs of the stool, with your feet in a 45 degrees angle. Sit in this position for 5 seconds.
Remove the printing paper from the paper towels and mark the center of the wet pressure points with your market pen. Once you have done so, measure the distance between the two points in millimeters.
Measure the distance between the two points.
Find the ideal saddle size based on your measurements in the chart in the video or on the saddle measurement cube.
Remember that the exact saddle which will suit you best will also be determined by your riding style and position on the bike. A more aggressive, or forward position on the saddle will perhaps require a wider saddle nose, while being more upright and sitting on the back of the saddle could require a narrower saddle.
